BressayBressay is an island of Shetland which lies opposite the islands' chief town, Lerwick, across Bressay Sound. At eleven square miles, it is the fifth largest island in Shetland, and it has a population of around 400 people, concentrated in the middle of the west coast, around Glebe, Fullaburn and Maryfield. The island is made up of old red sandstone and was formerly quarried extensively for building materials, used all over Shetland, especially in nearby Lerwick. There are a number of sea caves and arches around its coast. (Read more) |
