The Bass Rock, East Lothian

Bass Rock

The Bass Rock is an island in the form of a huge boulder standing stark in the sea in the outer part of the Firth of Forth forming part of East Lothian. It is approximately a mile and a half offshore, and defies many attempts to land safely, so fierce are the rolling waves of the Forth against its unyielding rocky sides. Nevertheless, it has served as a fortress and a grim prison.

The Bass reaches 351 feet at its highest point, and it is home to a large colony of gannets. The castle was built to defend the Forth but after Cromwell’s days it became a notorious prison. A lighthouse was built on the rock in 1902. (Read more)
