ArbroathArbroath is a royal burgh and the largest town in Angus after Dundee. A busy fishing port, Arbroath stands on the North Sea coast, some 16 miles eastward of Dundee and 45 miles south of Aberdeen. The history of Arbroath as a town began in the High Middle Ages with the founding of Arbroath Abbey in 1178, at which abbey the Declaration of Arbroath was made in 1320. The industrial revolution saw new growth, from the flax and jute industries and engineering. A new harbour was built in 1839 and by the 1900s, Arbroath had become one of the larger fishing ports in Scotland. (Read more) |
