Support Force Glacier
Support Force Glacier is a glacier flowing north-north-eastwards into the Filchner Ice Shelf in the British Antarctic Territory between the Forrestal Range and Argentina Range, amongst the Pensacola Mountains, in Queen Elizabeth Land in the British Antarctic Territory.
Following the first Argentine flight to the South Pole by the Grupo Aeronaval UT 78 in January 1962, the lower part of this glacier in c. 82°50'S 46°00'W was called 'Glaciar Les Eclaireurs' (after the transport ship Les Eclaireurs which, in 1957, made the first tourist cruise to the Antarctic) and the upper part of the glacier 'Glaciar Punta Ninfas' after the tanker Punta Ninfas (which took part in the Argentine Antarctic Expedition of 1949-50). The glacier was photographed from the air by the United States Navy in 1964 and mapped from air photographs by the United States Geological Survey; named 'Support Force Glacier' after the US Naval Support Force Antarctica, which has provided support for the United States Antarctic Research Programme.
