South Huish is a village and parish in the Stanborough Hundred of Devon, about four miles south-west of Kingsbridge.[1] The parish includes Galmpton and Hope Cove.[2] According to the 2011 census the parish had a population of 473,[3] the parish had an estimated population of 436 in 2017.[4] The parish touches West Alvington, South Milton and Malborough. The parish is in the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Features

St Andrew's Church is a ruined Grade-II* listed building.[5] There is a school in Malborough called Malborough With South Huish Church Of England Primary School.[6] South Huish Reserve is located in a shallow valley cut off from the sea by the dunes behind South Milton Sands and is in the ownership of the National Trust which took ownership in 2011. Devon Birds has managed it since 1994.[7] There are 27 listed buildings in South Huish.[8]

History

The name "Huish" means household.[9] South Huish was recorded in the Domesday Book as Hewis/Heuis[10] and had a population of 12,[11] both South Huish and Galmpton had Ralph as a holder.[12] Alternative names for South Huish are "Huish South" and "Huish".[13] The site of a submarine forest was uncovered in 1923.[14]
