Sheephaven Bay
Sheephaven Bay is a broad, shallow inlet on the north coast of County Donegal. It is bounded by two peninsulas: Rosguill, to the east and Horn Head to the west. The bay is thus relatively protected from the full force of the Atlantic Ocean, and has supported a vibrant herring fleet.
Name
The Irish name Cuan na gCaorach means 'Haven of the Sheep'. It is thought though that this is modern, and that an older name was Cuan na gCurrach, meaning 'Bay (or Haven) of the Currachs (boats)'. Whether the old name became "Ships Haven' in English, which was then subtly changed then retranslated, or whether the change took place in Irish, from Caorach to Currach, may not b determinable.
Doe Castle
On the shore of Sheephaven Bay stands Doe Castle, near Creeslough. It was built in the early 16th century and was a stronghold for the Clan Sweeney (Suibhne) for 200 years.[1]
