Rossini Point
Rossini Point is the tip of the Monteverdi Peninsula, the southernmost extent of Alexander Island in the British Antarctic Territory. It is a snow-covered headland which marks the south-east side of the entrance to the Bach Inlet; the entrance to the bay occupied by Bach Ice Shelf.
The point was first seen and roughly mapped by the United States Antarctic Service between 1939 and 1941. It was remapped in greater detail from air photos obtained by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition of 1947–48, by Searle of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey in 1960.
The headland was named by the United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee for Gioacchino Rossini (1792–1868), Italian composer; one of numerous features in the south of the island named after composers or their works.
