Rainsborough Camp
Rainsborough Camp is an Iron Age fort in southern Northamptonshire, found between the villages of Croughton, Aynho and Charlton.
The fort covers six acres and has two rings of defences: the inner ring of the earthworks is in very good condition with clearly distinguishable rampart and ditch, while the outer bank is mostly levelled and the outer ditch is filled. The original entrance is at the west.
Rainsborough Camp was excavated in 1961-1965, which revealed that the ramparts were built in the 5th century BC, but the hillfort might possibly have been preceded by an earlier enclosure.
The fort has been reoccupied at various times in its history. Not far from the hill fort, a golden coin of the Emperor Vespasian was discovered. It is possible too that Rainsborough Camp was occupied also in the Middle Ages.
