Information

Page Bank Bridge carries a local road, Whitworth Road which runs from Brancepeth to Spennymoor, over the River Wear near in County Durham. It was built in 1995, replacing an earlier bridge built in 1853.

Page Bank, by the bridge, was once a small mining settlement but most of the residents left in the 1960s. A Roman bridge may have existed here.

The 1853 bridge was built as a railway bridge, carrying a line from Page Bank Colliery. The colliery closed in 1931. In 1947, the old railway bridge was converted into a road bridge. The bridge was damaged during floods in 1967 and was closed. It was finally replaced by the current bridge in 1995; a beam, steel girder bridge with a concrete deck.

The new bridge is slightly downstream of the old road bridge. The designer and engineer was D.J. Newbegin.

The Weardale Way runs along the north bank of the river here.
