Oldbury-on-Severn is a small village close to the east shore of the River Severn's estuary, in the south of Gloucestershire. The village population at the 2011 census was recorded as 780.
Nearby stands the Oldbury nuclear power station, a Magnox power station which opened in 1967 and which ceased operation on 29 February 2012.
The area has been considered for nuclear 'new build' totalling some 3,000 MW of capacity – either two or three Pressurised Water Reactors. This would be more than the river flow could provide cooling for and so natural-draught cooling towers with a possible height of 650 feet have been postulated as necessary: the existing station is 177 feet high.
Village attractions other than the abandoned nuclear reactor include a footpath near the river, a pub known as the Anchor Inn plus the village hall and two churches. It is also the home of Thornbury Sailing Club.
Parish church
The parish church is dedicated to St Arilda,[1] a local saint and martyr whose origins may lie in the fourth or fifth century.[2] The church stands on a small hill (at 115 feet above sea level, in a flat landscape, and provides an excellent viewpoint, and, for river travellers, a known waymark.
