At the east side of the village, beyond the railway line but otherwise all of a piece with the main village, is East Oakley, a hamlet separated from Basingstokes's outer edge by just a mile of farmland, while to the west. as a narrowly separated hamlet, is Church Oakley, where the parish church stands.

Churches

  • Methodist

St Leonard's has a community centre in the building opposite and the old school house where there is a pre-school nursery. Another church, St John's, was recently demolished for safety reasons and has been transformed into a garden of remembrance with the war memorial positioned on the site of the communion table.

The church supports Oakley CE Junior School.

About the village

The heart of the village stands about a green with a duck pond, surrounded by thatched houses.

The village has a small range of local busiesses, a doctor;s surgery, a genrakl store with a post office, a butcher, a cake shop, and others. There are three public houses, the Barley Mow, The Fox (on the B3400) and The Beach Arms. A coffee shop was an addition to the village. In Meon Road there is a beauty salon, a hairdresser salon and a well stocked charity shop.

There was once a railway station here, on the West of England Main Line, but it closed in 1963, and the buildings are now used by other businesses.

To the west of the village is Oakley Hall, an 18th-century Georgian manor that is now a hotel.[1]
