North Weald Bassett, more usually known simply as North Weald , is a village in Essex, found almost equidistantly three miles east of Epping, south of Harlow and northwest of Chipping Ongar. Its apparent sister village, South Weald, is about 8 miles to the southeast.
The main feature of the village and parish is North Weald Airfield, which holds frequent air shows and is familiar to those travelling the M11 motorway. The village and airfield are close by the M11, and just north of the M25 motorway.
A market is held every Saturday and Bank Holiday Monday at the airfield. The market is the biggest open air market in the country.[1]

The Redoubt / Mobilisation Centre [2] at North Weald was built at the end of the 19th century. It was one of several built to provide ammunition to protect London if war ever broke out. One Allan Williams Turret still survives there, 199 of these were built in the United Kingdom. This is possibly one of the last survivors. Two were built at North Weald to protect a nearby radio station.
