Bersted is a parish in the south-west of Sussex, near Bognor Regis and the coast, made up of two partially interdependent villages:
- North Bersted and
- Shripney
An industrial and business estate takes up the easternmost part of Bersted.
History
At North Bersted were found Celtic and Roman settlement remains, including the grave of a warrior known as the North Bersted Man.[1]
The ancient village of South Bersted is now part of Bognor Regis. It has the parish church for the ecclesiastical parish of Bersted, St Mary Magdalene. The church is of the 13th century and ifs a Grade II* listed building.[2]
North Bersted
North Bersted is today part of the built-up area next to Bognor Regis, accessed on the A259 road a mile north-west of the town's seafront centre.
Shripney
Shripney, in the northeast, has evolved from a thirteenth-century hamlet. It is on the A29 road two miles north of Bognor Regis. The Robin Hood pub is on Shripney Road. In Shripney Lane, there are over forty dwellings, including thatched cottages and caravans. The most recent change to Shripney Lane was when modern houses were built in 2004.
