Newton Cap Bridge. also known as Skirlaw's Bridge is a narrow, mediæval road bridge that crosses the River Wear at Bishop Auckland. It was reputedly built for Bishop Skirlaw of Durham whose official residence was at nearby Auckland Castle.[1]
This is one of oldest bridges on the Wear, and is a Grade I listed structure.[2] It has nevertheless probably rebuilt at various times. Footpaths were added in 1900 on cantilevered girders, but these were removed in 2002, being replaced by a single footpath. The bridge once carried the A689, until the adjacent railway viaduct (Newton Cap Viaduct) was converted to road use.
