Information |
Morton Manor is a manor house originating in the 13th century,[1] in Brading on the Isle of Wight in Hampshire. The house is to be found a mile south-west of the Sandown Road, on a narrow strip of land stretching south from the foot of the down by Yarbridge to the north end of Sandown Manor.
The original part of the house probably dates from around 1540, but built on earlier foundations. This 16th century house was fairly small but was extensively modified in the 19th century, undergoing substantial restoration in around 1890. From a little earlier are two early 19th century projections at the rear, one of which is a gun room. The house today is a Grade II listed building.[2]
A hotchpotch of materials is found in the structure of the house. . Original building is partially of stone rubble, part brick and part pebbledashed render on ground floor with tile-hung first floor.
In the early 20th century it was refurbished and extended in an Arts and Crafts style. There is still though a Tudor fireplace is in the dining room,[3] with William De Morgan green glazed tiles.[4]
The manor includes a small museum of rural life.
In 1998, a plaque was unveiled to commemorate the wartime service of members of the Women's Royal Naval Service.
By the house is a grade II listed granary.[5]
Grounds
The grounds contain 100 different varieties of Japanese maple. The sunken garden is of Elizabethan times while the terraces date to the 19th century.[1] The terraced gardens led to a vineyard which produced white wine;[6]
