Morton Castle and Loch

Morton is a parish in the district of Nithsdale, Dumfriesshire adjacent to the border with Lanarkshire. It contains Thornhill, a burgh of barony, and the larger portion of the village of Carronbridge. It extends in length about seven miles from north to south, with an extreme breadth of four miles. It is bounded to the north-east by Crawford (in Lanarkshire), and on the other sides by the parishes of Closeburn, Penpont, and Durisdeer.

The lower district is traversed by the A76 trunk road from Glasgow to Dumfries. The village of Morton is situated three miles north-east of Penpont. The parish is watered by the rivers Nith, Cample, and Carron, and near a small tributary of the Cample stand the ruins of Morton Castle, which belonged to Randolph in the reign of Robert the Bruce. The castle passed from the Randolphs to the Douglases, who take from hence the title of earl.
