Mitcham Vestry Hall is a municipal building in London Road, Mitcham, Surrey. A Victorian vestry hall, built for the parish of Mitcham, it went through an number of changes as the conurbation overwhelmed the old village of Mitcham and municipal authorities were created and changed as the generations passed.
History
The building was designed by Robert Masters Chart in the Victorian style, was opened in May 1887. The building was established as the vestry hall for the local parish before becoming the council offices for 'Mitcham Urban District Council' in 1915. It then became "Mitcham Town Hall" after the building had been enlarged to accommodate the headquarters of the new 'Municipal Borough of Mitcham' in 1934.[1]
In 1965, Mitcham's council was abolished and the town absorbed into a larger authority, and Mitcham Town Hall ceased to be a seat of local government. However after that it was retained to become a community centre known as the "Vestry Hall".[2]
