Middle Rainton was a small hamlet between West Rainton and East Rainton in County Durham.
The hamlet was however condemned to demolition by the local council; put in the notorious “Category D” for former coal-mining villages which were to be forced to decline, and be bought up cheap to be demolished with the population relocated to modern concrete housing.[1] Under this policy the village ceased to exist in the 1970s.
The site of Middle Rainton is now the Rainton Meadows Nature Reserve, open to the public: the ‘Middle Rainton Picnic Area’ has been created here.[2] The site lies on the A690 road, about three miles east of the A1(M).
