Information |
Merton Civic Centre is a municipal building in London Road, Morden, Surrey, and which is the headquarters of Merton Council.
The site was once that of a public house, "The Crown".[1]
The council acquired The Crown and levelled the site for a new building, which was designed by A. Green in the Modernist style, was developed by Bernard Sunley & Sons. It was opened as "Crown House" in 1962.[2] It is a 15-storey building, 162 feet high,[2] and was initially used as commercial offices and for postal sorting.[1] Many of the departments of Merton Council, which had previously been located at Wimbledon Town Hall, moved into the building in 1985[3] and, after a new council chamber and library extension had been built, it became the new Civic Centre for Merton in 1990.[1]
