Melmerby is a small village in the North Riding of Yorkshire, within the ancient liberty known as Richmondshire. It sits within Coverdale, a pretty valley amongst the Yorkshire Dales, about three miles south-west of Leyburn.
Nearby villages include Carlton and Agglethorpe.
Melmerby was historically a township in the large ancient parish of Coverham in the Yorkshire's North Riding,[1] and became a separate civil parish in 1866.[2]
Name
Melmerby is mentioned in the Domesday Book.[1] The name is Old Norse, meaning "Melmor's farmstead", and the personal name 'Melmor' is believed to be a Scandinavian borrowing from the Old Irish name Máel Muire.[3]
This is one of two villages of the name 'Melmerby' in the North Riding, the other being Melmerby near Ripon.
