Maghaberry or Magaberry is a large village and a townland in the south of County Antrim, five and half miles west of Lisburn and two and a half miles north of Moira, County Down. The 2001 Census recorded a population of 1,696 people.
The name of the place is derived form the Irish language: Maigh gCabraí means "Plain of poor land".[1]
About the village
Until the early 20th century, Maghaberry was a rural townland with a crossroads, on the edge of a plateau. The economy of the area was mainly farming, although there were some limestone quarries. Today, the village serves as a commuter settlement, with its population mostly working and shopping elsewhere. It includes a community centre, Maghaberry Primary School, two churches, a village hall and shops.
