Loughanure is a village in the north-west of County Donegal, in the Rosses area on the county's western coast. Its name is from the Irish language in which it is known as Loch an Iúir, which means 'Lake of the yew'.[1]
The village is found halfway between Gweedore and Dungloe, on the N56 road. This has been decreed a Gaeltacht area: according to the 2016 census, 37% of the population spoke Irish on a daily basis outside the education system.[2]
Niall Ó Dónaill was born here in 1908. An Irish-speaker, amongst other works he compiled an Irish-language dictionary called 'Fhoclóir Irish/Béarla' published in 1977, which is consulted by language students worldwide as the defintiive authority on Irish Gaelic.
