Korff Ice Rise, otherwise known as Korff Island, lies within the Ronne Ice Shelf that covers much of the Weddell Sea. It is to be seen to the east of Fletcher Promontory, a headland on the east coast of Palmer Land in the British Antarctic Territory. Korff rises to about 984 feet and extends north-east to south-west for some 106 miles
This feature was roughly mapped by an American traverse party from 'Ellsworth Station' in 1957-58, and named 'Korff Island' after Serge Alexander Korff (b. 1906), American physicist and cosmic ray specialist, of Finnish birth; Professor of Physics, New York University, 1946-72. The feature was further mapped on a radio echo-sounding flight by the British Antarctic Survey from 'Siple Station', Ellsworth Land, in January 1975 and shown to be an ice rise, which is to say that beneath the ice, the land surface is below sea level.
