Keig is a village and parish in central Aberdeenshire located three miles north-east of Alford. The village is situated at a crossroads on the B992 road which connects the village to Insch and Whitehouse in the very south of the parish, which itself is on the main road from Aberdeen to Alford, the A944.
Keig has a primary school and it is within the catchment area for Alford Academy, the nearest secondary school.
Keig Parish Church is set in the grounds of a churchyard, which continues to be the final resting place for many who have family ties (or indeed other connections) with the area. The church was saved from being sold off as a private dwelling in the early 2000s (decade), thanks to a group, the Friends of Keig Kirk, which supports the church to this day.[1]
Places of interest
Keig is located near Castle Forbes, which is the ancestral home of the Forbes family.
The historic Category A listed Bridge of Keig designed by the renowned architect Thomas Telford over the River Don with stunning views towards Castle Forbes is also a notable local landmark. In February 2010 the bridge was closed to traffic by Aberdeenshire Council amid fears of structural damage caused by the harsh winter conditions experienced at the end of 2009 and the early part of 2010.[2][3] Having undertaken major strengthening and repair work, it reopened on 18 September 2010.[4]
