James's Bay

James's Bay provides the major anchorage for the island of St Helena, the chief isle of St Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha. At the head of the bay is Jamestown, the territory's capital and the only true town (and indeed city) of the island.
James's Bay and Jamestown were named in at the Restoration in 1660 after James Duke of York, Lord High Admiral of England, and who became King James II in 1685 (and who was deposed in 1688).
The bay indents the island's northwest coast. It is a round water always dotted with boats. Facing it is the gorge in which Jamestown is squeezed.
Beyond the headland of Munden's Hill to the north is Rupert's Bay, named after James's cousin, where a new wharf was built for construction cargoes in 2012.
