Information

Holbury is an Iron Age hill fort to be found close to Holbeton in Devon. The fort is on a hilltop east of the Village approximately 310 feet above sea level overlooking the Erme Estuary.[1]

The remaining earthworks are not impressive. It is described by Historic England as a 'slight, univallate hillfort'. It is however a scheduled ancient monument.[2] It may be found 820 yards east of Holwell Lodge by Holbeton.

The site's prominent location gives it dramatic views down the Erme estuary to the south and several other local hillforts can be seen from the ramparts.

The fort has an ovoid central enclosure with a single rampart, and measures 306 yards long by 240 yards wide across the outer limits of the visible earthworks, with its highest point on the north side. The rampart includes a bank, outer ditch and counterscarp. The bank survives best on the north side, rising from the interior between 3 feet at its west end and 8 feet at its east. It is an average of 23 feet wide.[2]
