Hinton Ampner is a tiny village in Hampshire, in the downs in the midst of the county, due east of Winchester, and three miles south of New Arlesford. The A272 between Petersfield and Winchester runs along the north end of the village.
The principal house of the village is Hinton Ampner House, an early Georgian country house on the west side of the village which now belongs to the National Trust.
Just beyond is the source of the River Itchen, which becomes Winchester's river and later one of the two principal rivers of Southampton.
The parish church is All Saints; this is a mainly Norman church, rebuilt in the 13th century, but with elements of a previous, Anglo-Saxon church in its fabric.[1]
