Hengist Nunatak

Hengist Nunatak stands on the northern coast of Alexander Island in the British Antarctic Territory. It rises to about 1,970 feet above the sea, on the south-east side of the Roberts Ice Piedmont.

The peak was photographed from the air by the British Graham Land Expedition on 15 August 1936 and on 1 February 1937. It was surveyed from the ground by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey from 'Stonington Island' in 1948.

This nunatak was named after Hengist, the Jutish chieftain who, with his brother Horsa, led the first Anglo-Saxon bands to settle in Britain, and who became the first King of Kent, around 455 to 488. Just to the north are the Horsa Nunataks.
