Location of the Governor Islands in the South Orkney Islands

The Governor Islands are a group of islands and rocks half a nautical mile north of Penguin Point, the north-western extremity of Coronation Island, in the South Orkney Islands, part of the British Antarctic Territory.

These islands were discovered by Captains George Powell and Nathaniel Palmer during their joint cruise in December 1821. The name appears on a chart based upon a running survey of the South Orkney Islands in 1912–13 by Petter Sørlle, who roughly charted them: Sørlle named them Guvernor [sic] Islands in honour of Sir William Lamond Allardyce (1861-1930), Governor of the Falkland Islands and Dependencies, 1904-14. The islands were further charted by Discovery Investigations in 1933. The islands were surveyed by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey from Signy in 1956-58.
