Information |
The Gogginshill Tunnel is an abandoned railway tunnel that runs beneath Goggins Holl near Ballinhassig in County Cork, which was formerly part of the Cork, Bandon and South Coast Railway.
The tunnel was constructed between February 1850 and December 1851 by 300 men working day and night. It opened on 8 December 1851. There are three ventilation shafts and the tunnel is lined with brick, which was added between 1889 and 1890 after some minor collapses of the rock face.
The line closed on 1 April 1961.
This is the longest abandoned railway tunnel within the Republic of Ireland, measuring 906 yards end to end.
