Byre Hill and the Hopetown Monument

The Garleton Hills, in East Lothian, are a range of igneous hills, to the north of Haddington, at NT500760.

Geologically, they are formed largely from carboniferous tuffs and trachytic lavas. Although the highest point is only 590 feet, the hills are conspicuous throughout the county.

The western spur is Byres Hill, which is crowned by the Hopetoun Monument, a remembrance to John Hope, 4th Earl of Hopetoun, who commanded the British Army in the Peninsular War, after the death of Sir John Moore at Corunna.

The hills are a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Barnes Castle is built on south, while Garleton Castle is on the north slopes.
