Gaeltacht an Láir

Gaeltacht an Láir is an Irish-speaking area in central County Donegal, centred on the village of Fintown (Baile na Finne) and stretching south to Glencolmcille (Gleann Colm Cille) and north to Fanad and Rosguill. There are nearly 7,000 people living in the area and 2,000 daily Irish speakers.

  • Baile na Finne area: over 1,200 people living in the area of whom 500 are Irish speakers.
  • Gleann Colmcille area: over 3,000 people of whom 850 are Irish speakers.
  • Fanad / Rosguill: over 2,500 people, with 650 Irish speakers.

The village of Carrigart (Carraig Airt) is at the centre of this northernmost Gaeltacht in Ireland. It mainly covers the Fanad and Rosguill area.
