Firth of Tay is a sea channel twelve miles long and six miles wide, extending in a north-west to south-east direction between the northeast side of Dundee Island and the east portion of Joinville Island. The firth forms the eastern entrance to Active Sound with which it completes the separation of Dundee and Joinville Islands.
The channel was discovered in 1892–93 by Captain Thomas Robertson]] of the Dundee Whaling Expedition of 1892–93 and named by him after the Firth of Tay on whose shore stands the ships' home port, Dundee.
The channel was surveyed by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey from "Hope Bay", 1953-54 and 1958-61.
