Finchdean is a rural hamlet in Hampshire, hard by the border with Sussex, and a mile and a half east of Horndean. It gives its name to the county’s Finchdean Hundred.
The name of the village is from the Old English Finc denu, which is to say 'Finch valley', presumably from a prevalence of finches in the woods, but possibly from a landowner named 'Finc'. The name appears as Finchesdene in 1167, which may suggest the latter.[1]
The nearest railway station is a mile south of the village, at Rowlands Castle.
Finchdean has retained its village pound.
