and outlines of the building develop a natural rather thana contrived picturesqueness. The grouping of the housewith its attendant and attached offices and walled gardensshow the same spirit as that which animated the sixteenth-century Englishman when he built, in native style, a housein which to dwell in native manner. The plan shows(Fig. 22) that as we approach the entrance to the courtyard,we have on our left the stable building. In front is theopening through the north side of the court which admitsto a quadrangle, with inhabited buildings on three sides andon the fourth a cloister (Fig. 21) . This connects the housewith a studio, which was used by Lady Chance for herdelightful essays in garden sculpture. The material chieflyused for the walls is the small-sized yellow rubble-stone ofthe district; but above the windows and in many of thearchways lines of red roofing tiles are built in.
