Ewing Island is an ice-covered, dome-shaped island, or more properly an ice rise of some 984 feet elevation at the Larsen Ice Front of the Wilkins Coast of the British Antarctic Territory. It is eight nautical miles in diameter, lying 15 nautical miles north-east of Cape Collier, off the east coast of Palmer Land.
The island was probably seen from the ground by the United States Antarctic Service in 1940, for an irregularly shaped island was shown in c. 70°10'S 61°55'W on USHO chart 5411, 1946. It was identified from the air and roughly surveyed from the ground by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey with the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition in November 1947, and named for Dr Maurice Ewing of Columbia University, who assisted in planning the Ronne expedition's seismological programme.
The feature was photographed from the air by the United States Navy in 1966-69.
