Eleanor Cross, Geddington
The Eleanor Cross in Geddington, Northamptonshire is a survivor of one of the series of Eleanor crosses which once stood between Lincoln and London.
The crosses were erected by King Edward I in grief for his late Queen. Eleanor of Castile, each standing in a village or town where her coffin rested over night on its route from Lincoln to London, twelve in all. Three survive in any state of completeness, at Geddington, Hardingstone and Waltham Cross
The Geddington Eleanor Cross is the best-preserved of the three. It is unique among the surviving crosses in having a triangular plan, and a taller and more slender profile with a lower tier entirely covered with rosette diapering, instead of the arch-and-gable motif with tracery which appears on both the others; and canopied statues surmounted by a slender hexagonal pinnacle.[1]
