It is in the south of Lanarkshire, at the north-eastern end of the long ridge which contains the Lowther Hills' two height summits: Lowther Hill (2,377 feet on the county border) and Green Lowther (2,403 feet in Lanarkshire in the midst of the ridge).
The hill IS named from the small burn running off its northern slope, known as the Dun Grain.
