Cottonshopeburnfoot is a hamlet in Redesdale in Northumberland. It stands beside the A68 road, 2 miles south east of the village of Byrness.
The Pennine Way passes through here.
Name
The hamlet takes its name from Cottonshope Burn, which flows into the River Rede here.
Cottonshopeburnfoot claims to have the longest single-word name in England, closely followed by the neighbouring hamlet of Blakehopeburnhaugh.[1] The name is also spelt 'Cottonshopeburn Foot',[2] which would make Blakehopeburnhaugh the longest single-word name, but thankfully for the boasts of the Cottonshopeburnfooters, the Ordnance Survey favours the single-word name.
The name comes from the village's position at the foot of the Cottonhope Burn, which takes its name from the valley in which it runs: 'hope' is an old Northumbrian/Scots word for a valley, from the Old English language.
