Coolcoulaghta Standing Stones
Coolcoulaghta Standing Stones are a pair of standing stones in County Cork, forming a stone row, which has been declared a National Monument
The stones stand in a field two miles south-west of Durrus.
- Location map: 51°35’48"N, 9°32’36"W
History
The stones probably date to the Bronze Age period. Their alignment points towards Dunbeacon Stone Circle a quarter of a mile to the west and some have said that the stones may have been used for astronomical observation.[1][2]
The stones were removed in 1980 but then replaced in 1983 by the Office of Public Works, after local outcry, using a plan and elevation made in 1977 by archaeologists of Ordnance Survey Ireland.
Description
The stones are both about six feet tall.[3]
A third stone once stood 70 yards south-south-west of the pair, but this has since been removed.[4]
