Colyford is a sizable village in the very east of Devon, to be found on the A3052 Lyme Regis to Exeter road, situated midway between Lyme Regis (in Dorset) and Sidmouth (in Devon). Seaton is two miles to the south on the coast and Colyton a mile. further inland. It is placed within Colyton's civil parish boundaries.

The village of Colyford was formerly an Ancient Borough of long-standing and still elects a Mayor.

The village has a post office, a butcher, and two pubs; the Wheelwright and the White Hart. In recent years the village has lost the service of its village petrol station, which later became a museum of motoring memorabilia until closed in 2013.

Chapel

Colyford has a chapel-of-ease, dedicated to St Michael and All Angels

Society and events

The Memorial Hall serves as a village community hall.

The Michaelmas Goose Fayre is held on Springfields on the south side of the village every year. Villagers and friends dress in mediæval costume, with mummers and mediæval music, as they follow the Mayor and his Lady, in a horse-drawn cart, as they process along the main road to the fayre ground.

Tram reaching Colyford

One of the village's attractions is Seaton Tramway, which runs over part of the former Seaton Branch line between Seaton, Colyford and Colyton. The branch closed in 1966, and tram services from Colyford commenced in 1971. Colyford Station is located next to the White Hart Inn, and the journey times from Colyford are 13 minutes to Seaton, and 9 minutes to Colyton. The Tramway operates a daily service from Easter to the end of October, and a more limited service outside of this period.

Colyton Grammar School dates from 1546[1] and made headlines in recent years as the first school to 'opt out' of local authority control and gain grant-maintained status. It is located on a narrow lane and is not visible from the main road.
