Colemore is a hamlet amongst the Hampshire Downs in eastern Hampshire, sitting about five miles north-west of Petersfield. Once this was a sizable village, but became deserted, possibly in the Middle Ages.
The abandoned village had houses south-west of the parish church and south-east of manor farm, now gone. The land where they stood is now a Scheduled Ancient Monument.[1]
Manor Farmhouse is an early 17th-century brick house, altered in the middle of the 19th century.[2]
Church
The church in the village, the Church of St Peter ad Vincula ("St Peter in Chains"), was once the Church of England parish church, but it has been declared redundant and is in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust.[3]
The earliest parts of the church are of the 11th-century. It is Grade II* listed building.[4]
The brothers John Greaves (1602–52, mathematician), Edward Greaves (1608–80, physician) and Thomas Greaves (1612–76, orientalist) were all sons of a rector of the parish and born in the village.[5] A later orientalist, Richard Pococke (1704–65), was also the son of a rector of the parish.
