The Cluden Water by East Cluden Mill

The Cluden Water is a river forming part of the boundary between Dumfriesshire and Kirkcudbrightshire, and which is ultimately a tributary of the River Nith.

The Cluden Water is formed by the union of the Cairn Water from the north and the Old Water from the south, coming out of Dumfriesshire and Kirkcudbrightshire respectively. They join by Newtonairds farm and from here the Cluden Water flows eastwards, marking the county border for some three miles.

The river enters the Nith at Lincluden, a suburb at the northern edge of Dumfries, and below this point the Nith assumes the duty of marking the boundary.
