Information |
The Church of Agios Ermogenis is a small, remarkable church to the east of the ancient Graeco-Roman city of Kourion, in the Western Sovereign Base Area of Akrotiri and Dhekelia. Dedicated to Saint Ermogenis, it is also held by local tradition to contain the saint's bones. The church belongs to the Church of Cyprus, the autocephalous Greek Orthodox church of the island.
The church is of ancient foundation, though the current church was built in the 17th century, during the Ottoman period. The origin of the church is claimed to date back to the 4th century. Saint Ermogenis, the Bishop of Samos, was martyred on the latter island, an isle in the Aegean, and his body cast into the sea in a wooden casket. Tradition has it that the casket wased up on the coast of Cyprus, by Kourion, and local Christans built a church in that place.
Ware destroyed whatever ancient church stood here, and in the 17th century today's church was built to replace it.
Built with rough stones, the church stands alone in the groves.
Beow the church is Agios Ermogenis Beach.
