Brades (or Brades Estate) is a large village on Montserrat, in the Parish of Saint Peter. It has a population of about 1,000 and has been the de facto capital of Montserrat since 1998, after the destruction of Plymouth.[1]
The village is in the vicinity of Carr's Bay and Little Bay, at the north-west end of Montserrat.
In 1997, the Soufriere Hills volcano erupted and its lava and ash swept down upon the south of the island and buried the capital Plymouth, which had been swiftly evacuated. The site of Plymouth has lain abandoned since then (and is in the Exclusion Zone). Interim government buildings were built at Brades, which has therefore become the capital of the territory.
A new capital is being built close by Brades, at Little Bay.
