Blackwell is a former mining village in Derbyshire, in the north-east of the county three and a half miles north-east of Alfreton.
The population of the wider civil parish as of the 2011 census was 4,389: this parish includes three other villages, namely Hilcote, Newton and Westhouses.
The main industry of Blackwell was coal mining. On 11 November 1895, seven men were killed in an underground explosion at the colliery. The mine was closed in 1969 since when light industry has taken over.
There are two churches in the village:
- Church of England : St Werburgh’s
- Methodist: Blackwell Methodist Church[1]
