Back Mesa is an ice-covered, flat-topped mountain with rock exposures, 2,428 feet high, located east of Hidden Lake on the Ulu Peninsula of James Ross Island in the British Antarctic Territory. It displays excellent exposure of structure within volcanic rocks.
Following British Antarctic Survey geological work, 1985–86, the mountain was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee after Dr. Eric Hatfield Back, as Surgeon Lieutenant in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, who served as medical officer on Operation Tabarin at Port Lockroy, 1943–44, and Hope Bay, 1944–45.
