Asphyxia Plain is a low-lying plain that dominates the shoreline of Zavodovski Island, northernmost of the South Sandwich Islands, beneath the gaze of the island's single, actively volcanic, peak, Mount Asphyxia.
The plain supports approximately one million breeding pairs of Chinstrap penguins (Pygoscelis antarctica).
The plain was named in reference to Mount Asphyxia following surveys from HMS Protector in 1962 and 1964. The mountain is named in reference to the stifling volcanic fumes emitted from an active crater south-west of the mountain's summit.
