The Aghaward fort is a ringfort (known in Ireland as a 'rath') in County Longford. Its date is uncertain: it may be from the Iron Age or even the Bronze Age.
The ringfort is an enclosure with a high earthen bank and external ditch, the bank rising 8 feet from the base of the ditch.
Today the site is enrolled as a National Monument.
Location
Aghaward fort is located about a mile north of Ballinalee, just north of Aghaward House. There are several springs nearby, and various tributaries of the River Camlin, which may have influenced the siting of the fort.
