St Mungo
St Mungo is a parish in Dumfriesshire, situated to the south of Lockerbie, within Annandale. It is bounded to the north-east by Tundergarth; to the east by Hoddom; to the south by Cummertrees; to the south-west by Dalton; and to the west and north by Dryfesdale. There are no sizeable villages in the parish, which had a population of 314 in 2011.
The River Annan flows 3½ miles south-eastward along the boundaries with Dalton and Cummertrees; and the Water of Milk flows for six miles south-westward, mainly through the interior, but for the first 1¾ miles along the boundary with Tundergarth, and for the last ⅔ mile along or near to that with Hoddam. It ultimately falls into the Annan at the south-east corner of the parish.
The A74(M) motorway passes through the very north of St Mungo, with junction 18 allowing access to and from the south only. The nearest railway station is at Lockerbie, with services to Edinburgh, Glasgow, London and Manchester Airport.
The present parish church, sits a picturesque site 200 yards to the south-east of its predecessor of 1842, near the right bank of the Water of Milk. It is is a handsome edifice erected in 1875-77. It is Scottish Gothic in style, built of light grey freestone from designs by David Bryce.
In 1116 the parish bore the name of Abermilk, which had become Castlemilk by 1170, and after that, St Mungo. The name of Castlemilk survives in Castlemilk House, a country house in the parish completed in 1866.
